After 20+ years of international travel, I’ve developed a simple system for turning travel dreams into realistic, efficient travel plans.

Using a consistent and efficient strategy helps ensure that your travel experience matches your travel dreams. That’s when great travel experiences happen. This is SMART travel.

How to plan a trip with the SMART Framework

The SMART Framework is a five-step approach to planning a trip, from the initial dream to the finished travel plan. Here’s how it works.

1. Specify

The first step toward SMART travel is to understand your travel dreams and expectations. Before making any travel plans, ask yourself a simple question: What am I looking for from this trip? Is it a quiet getaway on a beach? Or an exhilarating journey through history in France or Italy?

Understanding your expectations is the foundation of a great trip. It helps ensure that your travel itinerary matches what you actually want from the experience. Before choosing destinations, hotels, activities, or transportation, first identify what will make the trip meaningful to you.

Start by identifying your expectations, the destinations that interest you, and when you can travel.

2. Maximize & Minimize

The second step is to turn your travel dreams into a realistic plan by maximizing the resources you have: time and money. Determine how much time you can spend traveling and how much you are comfortable spending. Then look for ways to get the most from both.

Making the most of your travel time and travel budget helps you create a trip that is enjoyable without stretching your resources beyond what makes sense for you.

Put your dreams on paper by adding specific travel dates and a realistic budget to your rough travel plan.

3. Aim & Apply

Now that you know what you want from your trip and the time and money you have available, it’s time to start matching your travel dreams to a destination. A rough itinerary is a great starting point. Begin with the major destinations, cities, or landmarks that fit your interests.

This is where your travel dreams begin to take shape. Use your expectations, interests, travel dates, and budget to determine what your destination can realistically offer. Start with simple online research to create a rough list of places to see and things to do.

Adding details such as where to spend the night and how many days to spend in each location brings your travel itinerary closer to reality.

Initial rough travel plans provide a template for the detailed travel plan you’ll create later. You can see examples of how I develop these plans in my walking tours.

4. Research & Refine

Now it’s time to bring everything together: your expectations, resources, and destination. Use your research to refine your list of places to visit, while keeping your interests, travel dates, budget, and other limitations in mind. This is an iterative process—research may change your travel plan, and changes to your travel plan may lead to more research.

This is when your rough travel plan becomes a detailed itinerary. Add the information you need to make the plan practical, such as addresses, travel times, and geographical groupings of the places you want to visit. My detailed walking tour of Verona, Italy is an example of this process.

Refine your travel plan with the details that will help you use your time efficiently once you arrive at your destination.

The goal is not to plan every moment of your trip. It’s to understand your destination well enough that your time, transportation, and activities fit together naturally.

5. Travel & Enjoy

Now your travel plan has the details you need—dates, times, places, and practical information. It’s time to turn your plan into a real trip by booking the flights, hotels, and transportation that make sense for your itinerary.

You don’t necessarily need to book every detail in advance. Your SMART travel plan gives you a clear framework while leaving room for flexibility and spontaneity along the way. My recommended travel resources can help you find the right options and save money along the way.

Now it’s time to put your plan into action and enjoy the travel experience you’ve been dreaming about!
