Santa Barbara to Santa Monica Drive At a Glance
We’re starting our driving route on the portion of the PCH where it joins Highway 101, between Santa Barbara and Ventura. This happens a few times on the PCH where the California coast access is very narrow, allowing for only one highway.
Santa Barbara to Santa Monica Drive Highlights
- Make sure you drive South instead of driving North. This way the ocean views are completely open and it’s easy for you to stop on the side of the road for the spots that appeal to you.
- Drive time without traffic: 2 hours without stopping and without traffic.
- Drive time with traffic: Up to 5 hours without stopping. Heavy traffic happens frequently between Santa Barbara and Ventura and also between Malibu and Santa Monica especially in the afternoons (3 to 6pm). Friday afternoons have the worst traffic.
- Amazing views throughout the route with plenty of panoramic points. Be on the lookout for signs for Vista Point and be ready to stop.
- Make time to go to the beach as this route has some of the best beaches in the world.
- There are a couple of opportunities for short hikes that give you a different view of the coast.

- Public parking in Santa Barbara is plentiful if you look for it in the city-operated lots near the beachfront and along State Street. For the beach area, try parking at Skaters’ Park or if full, drive lower on Cabrillo Blvd at East Beach.

2. Carpinteria
We continue our Santa Barbara to Santa Monica drive on Highway 101 going South for about 20 minutes until we reach Carpinteria, a small and relaxed California beach town. Carpinteria serves as an accessible and charming coastal stops on this segment. Known for its laid-back atmosphere and the world’s safest beach, it is an excellent place to take a break and enjoy a walk along the shoreline. The town’s small-town vibe offers a refreshing contrast to the more urban stretches of the drive, making it a perfect spot for a relaxed morning coffee or a brief walk on the sand to stretch your legs.
Carpinteria Highlights
- Carpinteria is all about its large and beautiful beach. Gorgeous, family friendly beach with perfect sand and water.
- Near the beach you will find many local restaurants and a great brewery.
Carpinteria Logistics
- Parking in Carpinteria can be difficult if you arrive after noon. If you are timing your stop, prioritize the mid-morning hours; the public parking on Linden Avenue fills up quickly on weekends as beachgoers arrive. Aim to arrive before 10:00 AM to secure a spot and ensure you have a straightforward path back to the PCH without getting trapped in local neighborhood traffic.
- You can also find parking a few blocks away from the beach on 6th Street or other nearby streets.
Is Carpinteria Worth Visiting?
If want to spend time on a beautiful California Beach, especially if you have children, then Carpinteria will be a great stop. The water is a bit warmer because it is quite shallow for a long distance. If however, you want to go to the beach in Malibu or other more famous spots, you can skip Carpinteria.

See my photos from Ventura Mission
After another 20 minutes driving on Highway 101/Highway 1 we’re continuing our Pacific Coast Highway adventure in the old town of Ventura. Ventura balances historic charm with beautiful coastal walks and lots of restaurants. It is also the most affordable place on our Santa Barbara to Santa Monica drive.
Ventura Highlights
- Driving from Carpinteria to Ventura, you will pass along some of the most beautiful but unknown beaches in the world. If you decide to spend more time on your PCH drive and dedicate more time for the beach here are some gorgeous beaches to consider on your way to Ventura: La Conchita, Rincon Point and Mondo’s (for surfing).
- Walk the iconic Ventura Pier, which offers expansive ocean views and serves as a natural anchor for the area.
- For a beautiful beach walk take a stroll from the Pier to the Ventura River Estuary where the river meets the ocean. You will see lots of birds and sea life.
- Take a short hike through the Ventura Botanical Garden all the way to the Serra Cross for gorgeous ocean views all the way up. You can also simply drive straight to Serra Cross and enjoy the views from on top.
Ventura Logistics

- From Santa Barbara, you might connect further north with my San Luis Obispo to Santa Barbara PCH Drive.
Is Ventura Worth Visiting?
Ventura is a great stop especially if you want to spend most of the day at the beaches between Carpinteria and Ventura. Ventura is a great place to spend the night before driving South on the Pacific Coast Highway towards Malibu. However, if want to focus on Malibu and Santa Monica, you can skip stopping in Ventura. This area however is one of my favorite and underrated areas on the entire Southern California coast.

Our Santa Barbara to Santa Monica drive is taking us on the proper Highway 1 (PCH) as we leave the 101 Freeway (Exit Rice Ave.) and head south through Oxnard towards Point Mugu State Park. Neptune’s Net is a legendary PCH landmark and a high-energy stop that has been featured in countless films and television shows. Beyond its pop-culture fame, it serves as the ultimate casual refueling spot, offering fresh seafood and a front-row seat to the constant stream of classic cars and motorcycles that make this highway famous. It is an quintessential stop for a quick, unpretentious lunch while soaking in the unique car culture of the area.
Parking at Neptune’s Net parking lot can be chaotic especially for dinner in the evening. Instead, stop during the week for lunch as the crowds are much smaller. If driving South you can easily find a free spot across the street on the shoulder which gives you easy beach access. Be careful crossing the PCH to Neptune’s Net as cars are going very fast.
Is Neptune’s Net Worth Visiting?
Stop if you want a bite to eat and you want to see lots of California surfers and groups of motorcycle riders. Neptune’s Net sits right at the county line between Ventura and Los Angeles Counties, thus the name of the beach: County Line Beach. Once you park your car you can easily access the beach here.

Our Pacific Coast Highway itinerary brings us closer to Malibu as we pass through another state park. Leo Carrillo State Park is a hidden gem known for its sea caves and tide pools, offering a more intimate connection with the ocean than the busier beaches further south. It is an ideal spot for nature lovers who want to explore unique geological formations or simply enjoy the sounds of the crashing surf in a slightly quieter, more serene environment.
Leo Carillo State Park Highlights
- The Tide Pools are very exciting especially if you have small children. They will be delighted to see all the sea life up close and personal.
- The North Beach at Leo Carillo is just gorgeous and very family friendly with shallow water.
- The park has a few hikes which give you amazing views of the ocean.

Our drive from Santa Barbara to Santa Monica on the PCH brings us finally to Malibu. Malibu is the glamorous centerpiece of this route, offering world-class surf breaks, iconic architecture, and stunning ocean vistas. This is the place to stop if you want to experience the “California Dream” in its purest form, whether by grabbing a bite at a coastal cafe or taking a moment to watch the surfers at Surfrider Beach. - The Getty Villa is simply stunning to visit as it quickly transports you during Roman times.
Malibu Logistics
- Read my detailed self-guided Malibu tour for an efficient way of visiting Malibu area.
- For Zuma Beach there is plenty of parking in the public lots for a small fee.
- Finding parking for Point Dume is next to impossible unless you park in the public lot at the bottom and take the short trail up the ridge. It’s well worth it.
- For accessing the pier area, park at the Adamson House beach lot.
- Getty Villa is free to visit but you have to reserve your entry time at Getty Villa which guarantees parking for your car (for which you pay). During the summer, you must reserve at least a week in advance to guarantee your day and time.
- You can only drive inside the Getty Villa driving Northbound on the PCH. If you drive South you have to perform a U-turn.
Is Malibu Worth Visiting?
Absolutely! You just have to decide where in Malibu to stop, or even better, decide if you will spend the night in Malibu.
If you love the beach, go to Zuma and Point Dume. If you love to see birds and sea life, go to the beach at the Pier.
8. Santa Monica

Santa Monica is the energetic finale of your coastal drive, blending a world-famous pier, a bustling promenade, and a vibrant urban beach culture. It is the perfect place to conclude your itinerary with a walk on the historic Santa Monica Pier or a look at the Pacific Park rides. The transition from the rural, rugged beauty of the northern sections to the bustling, iconic urban life of Santa Monica provides a satisfying conclusion to your journey.
This is a dense, high-traffic environment. The city utilizes a massive, well-organized municipal parking structure system that is far superior to street parking; follow the digital signs immediately upon entering the city to find these structures. Using these decks will save you significant time and prevent the “parking hunt” that plagues less-prepared drivers in this area.
Santa Monica Highlights
- High energy Santa Monica Pier marks the end of the historical Route 66 and it’s buzzing with people from all over the world.
- The Santa Monica State Beach is very large and accommodates lots and lots of people.
- Walking through the small park along Ocean Avenue gives you beautiful panoramic views of the entire pier area.
- Third Street Promenade is a bustling pedestrian area full of shops and restaurants. It has everything you can think of.
Santa Monica Logistics
In Santa Monica you have to keep logistics simple, otherwise you will spend a lot of time looking for parking. You must pay for public parking, which can be expensive but it beats driving around looking for cheaper lots.
- For the Pier area, park in the huge public lot right on the beach.
- For Third Street Promenade park in one of the large lots like Parking Lot 5.
As you come South on the PCH, make sure you don’t miss the right turn into the parking lot as it’s very difficult to come back and park.
Is Santa Monica Worth Visiting?
Yes, even though very busy, Santa Monica is another iconic Southern California beach town. If you’ve come to see California, Santa Monica has it all: beach, bluffs, pier, restaurants, shopping and even the famous Southern California traffic.
Is a Santa Barbara to Santa Monica Drive Worth It?
Absolutely. If you approach this route with the right plan, the Santa Barbara to Santa Monica drive is one of the most rewarding coastal experiences in California. While the congestion and logistical hurdles—particularly around Malibu—can be intimidating for the unprepared, they are manageable with the strategic timing and parking tips outlined in this guide. For the traveler who values the journey as much as the destination, this route is not just worth it; it is an essential piece of the Southern California experience.
