1. Take in the Portofino Harbor: The Colorful Heart of the Village

The colorful Portofino Harbor, a top thing to do in Portofino.
Exploring the vibrant harbor is one of the best things to do in Portofino and the starting point of our Portofino walking tour.

Book a Local Portofino Walking Tour. This is the best way to visit Portofino if you are short on time.

Any self-guided Portofino walking tour should begin at the harbor, where the vibrant atmosphere welcomes every visitor. Picture yourself strolling along the crescent-shaped waterfront, surrounded by tall, narrow houses painted in warm shades of ochre, coral, peach, and terracotta. These colors reflect beautifully off the water, especially in the morning and late afternoon light. Our walking tour of Portofino starts here, and it’s the perfect place to pause for an espresso, aperitivo, or leisurely lunch at a café overlooking the sea.

Small fishing boats and luxury yachts sit side by side in the calm harbor, creating a unique mix of old-world charm and modern elegance. Along the water, restaurants and cafés spill out onto the promenade, making it the perfect place to pause for an espresso, aperitivo, or leisurely lunch. Even if you don’t sit down right away, walking the harbor and soaking in the atmosphere is a must. This is also the social hub of Portofino. You’ll see day-trippers arriving by boat, hikers returning from the trails above, and locals going about their day. Take your time here—this is Portofino at its most iconic.

Beyond the high-end boutiques, one of the most relaxing things to do in Portofino is simply sitting by the water and watching the ferry boats arrive.

2. Visit the Church of San Martino

Since we’re in the harbor, let’s walk up the stairs to a beautiful striped church. The Church of San Martino, Portofino’s 12th‑century parish church, sits just above the harbor and has long been the spiritual heart of the village. Built in the Ligurian Gothic style and dedicated to St. Martin of Tours, it originally served the local fishing community, who looked to the saint for protection at sea. Its striped façade and blend of medieval and later Baroque elements make it one of the most distinctive architectural stops on any self-guided Portofino walking tour.

Inside, the Church of San Martino may be modest in size, but it’s filled with heartfelt history. A 17th‑century wooden crucifix stands as the central devotional piece, reflecting centuries of local faith. Even more striking are the ex‑votos—small offerings left by sailors who survived storms or shipwrecks. These tokens, from painted plaques to tiny model boats, form a touching record of Portofino’s maritime past and give the church a uniquely personal atmosphere. It’s a simple stop, yet one that adds real emotional depth to your Portofino walking route.

3. Hike to San Giorgio Church

View of San Giorgio Church, a must-see landmark on a Portofino walking tour.
The panoramic view from San Giorgio is one of the best things to do in Portofino; it’s a highlight of this self-guided Portofino walking tour route.

Our Portofino walking tour continues with a scenic hike to San Giorgio, offering breathtaking views. The Church of San Giorgio, perched above Portofino, was originally built in 1154 in Romanesque style, destroyed during World War II, and rebuilt in the 1950s. Walking through Portofino, the path climbs steadily through narrow streets and stone stairways, gradually lifting you above the village.

Inside, you’ll find several beautiful frescoes from the 16th century illustrating the life of St. George, as well as relics brought back by sailors returning from the Crusades. San Giorgio Church itself is simple and historic, but the real highlight is the nearly 360-degree views—looking back over the colorful harbor, out toward the open Ligurian Sea, and across the lush green hills of the peninsula. Pause here to soak in the scenery, snap some photos, and appreciate how dramatically Portofino is set into the landscape. This is a place where you should linger and let the beauty sink in.

If you’re looking for active things to do in Portofino, the hike up to San Giorgio offers the best effort-to-reward ratio for photographers.

4. Walk to Portofino Lighthouse (Faro di Portofino)

Walking to the lighthouse is one of the most scenic things to do in Portofino, marking the furthest point of our Portofino walking tour.

We continue our self-guided Portofino walking tour itinerary along a narrow cobblestone path toward the lighthouse, revealing dramatic sea views. From San Giorgio, the walk continues along a narrow cobblestone path toward the Portofino Lighthouse, known as the Faro di Portofino. My walking route offers a more secluded experience here, winding through greenery and offering occasional openings to breathtaking sea views far below.

About halfway along this route, you’ll pass Castello Brown, a historic villa perched high above the harbor. If you have time, consider visiting for panoramic views and terraced gardens. As you continue toward the lighthouse, the crowds thin out and the atmosphere becomes quieter. The lighthouse itself sits at the edge of the peninsula, overlooking open water. Even if you don’t go inside, the surrounding area is peaceful and scenic—a perfect contrast to the liveliness of the harbor below.

Walking to the Faro is widely considered one of the best things to do in Portofino for those who want to escape the afternoon crowds.

5. Visit Castello Brown: Portofino’s Historic Fortress

Brown Castle in Portofino
Brown Castle is perched on a hill top in Portofino

No self-guided Portofino walking tour is complete without a stop at Castello Brown, the historic fortress that watches over the village from above. Built as a coastal defense around 400 AD and expanded in the 16th century, Castello Brown was later transformed into a romantic villa in the 1800s and now serves as a museum. Inside, you’ll find medieval bas-reliefs, frescoes, antique furniture, and rotating art exhibitions that bring the castle’s history to life.

The castle’s rooms and terraces are filled with stories—don’t miss the medieval wooden coffered roof painted with saints and rulers, or the marble bas-relief from the 11th century depicting St. Martin, the Virgin, and St. George slaying the dragon. But the real highlight is stepping out onto the panoramic terraces, where you’re treated to breathtaking views of Portofino’s colorful harbor, the sparkling Ligurian Sea, and the lush hillsides. It’s a photographer’s dream and a perfect spot to pause, soak in the scenery, and appreciate the beauty of the Italian Riviera. Whether you’re interested in history, art, or simply stunning vistas, Castello Brown is a must-see on your walking tour of Portofino.

You can also access Castello Brown from the harbor through its gardens. This is very helpful if you are certain you want to visit Castello Brown.

6. A Scenic Return

Beautiful view of Portofino

My Portofino walking tour itinerary takes you back on the same ridge path to return back to the gorgeous harbor. However, when you come close to the harbor, take the stairs for a scenic return through the hillside. This will give you more gorgeous views of the Portofino harbor.

Once back at the harbor, you will encounter a small sculpture garden, where art is placed naturally into the landscape. The open-air sculptures, part of Portofino Museum, add an unexpected creative element to the walk and encourage you to slow down even more. This return route completes the walking loop beautifully, giving you yet another reason to appreciate Portofino’s thoughtful layout.

Where to Park in Portofino?

If you’re driving to Portofino, one of the most convenient parking options is the covered car park at Piazza della Libertà 13/A. It’s located just over 300 meters from the village square, open 24 hours, and charges about 6 euros per hour or 20 euros for the whole day.

What are the Best Hikes in Portofino?

There are several trails near Portofino but here are two popular trails. Most trails near Portofino start steep as you go up on the ridge where you will get gorgeous views of the surrounding area. Stairway of Death Trail is named for its very steep incline at the beginning. A little bit north of Portofino you will find Via Mulini Trail which is also a difficult but gorgeous hike.

For those interested in exploring more of the Ligurian coast, check out my detailed Genova article for additional travel inspiration and tips.

How to Get Around by Boat?

One of Portofino’s biggest advantages is its boat connectivity. From the harbor, you can easily take a ferry to Santa Margherita Ligure, which is larger and serves as a major transportation hub. From Santa Margherita Ligure, ferries and trains make it possible to continue on to places like Cinque Terre, including Monterosso al Mare, which is roughly a 90-minute boat ride away. Boats also run to nearby highlights such as San Fruttuoso Abbey, making Portofino an excellent base – or stop along a broader Ligurian coast itinerary.

How to Get Around by Train?

While Portofino doesn’t have a train station, the nearby towns of Santa Marguerita de Ligure and Rapallo have well connected train stations. With a 50-minute train ride to Cinque Terre’s Monterosso Al Mare, you can easily continue your trip on the Italian Riviera. However, because of the complex logistics, I don’t recommend doing a day trip to Cinque Terre and back by train. Rather, stay in Cinque Terre instead and spend a night or two in order to enjoy this beautiful area.
