Is Hearst Castle worth visiting? I think it is, especially if you’re exploring California’s Central Coast. We just don’t have castles here like they have in Europe. Castles are a thing of the past, and in California we don’t have many truly old buildings except for the historic missions scattered along the coast. So just the name “Hearst Castle” makes this unusual California attraction interesting almost immediately.
Wondering is Hearst Castle worth visiting? Unlike most attractions you’ll encounter in California, Hearst Castle offers a glimpse into an extraordinary early-20th-century estate filled with European art, architecture, antiques, gardens, and swimming pools. It’s not an ancient European castle, but that’s part of what makes this California landmark so unusual.
Reasons Hearst Castle Is Worth Visiting
There are several reasons why I think Hearst Castle is worth visiting, especially if you’re exploring California’s Central Coast. From the spectacular setting and unique architecture to the wildlife and overall experience, the castle offers much more than a historic building.
The Spectacular Views

For me, the spectacular views are one of the biggest reasons Hearst Castle is worth visiting. The estate sits high above the Pacific Coast on what William Randolph Hearst called the Enchanted Hill.
On a clear day, you can look out over the surrounding hills and the Pacific Ocean. The combination of the castle and its extraordinary coastal setting gives the visit a distinctly California character.
I’ve actually visited Hearst Castle multiple times, and the difference between these visits was remarkable.
Our first visit was during heavy rain and fog. The fog was so thick that we could barely see anything outside the castle windows. When we returned on a sunny day, we finally understood what makes this hilltop so special.
If you have flexibility in your schedule, I would skip visiting Hearst Castle on a foggy or rainy one. The castle is still interesting when the weather is bad, but you miss the important part of the experience.
The Unique Architecture

Neptune Pool is one of the main attractions at Hearst Castle.

Hearst Castle is also worth visiting because of its unusual architecture. The estate combines several European architectural styles, creating a place that feels completely different from the rest of California.
Instead of an ancient European castle, you’re seeing the extravagant vision of William Randolph Hearst brought to life in California.
One of my favorite features is Neptune Pool, one of the most recognizable attractions at Hearst Castle.
The combination of the elaborate buildings, gardens, swimming pools, artwork, and surrounding landscape makes the estate unlike almost anything else you can visit in California.
Wildlife Around Hearst Castle
Another unexpected part of visiting Hearst Castle is the wildlife. The hills surrounding the estate are home to wild animals, which adds another dimension to the experience.
You’re not simply visiting a historic building. You’re traveling to a spectacular hilltop overlooking the Pacific, where the surrounding landscape is still very much part of the experience.
This is one of the things that makes Hearst Castle worth visiting for me. The setting feels much more memorable than a typical museum or historic building.
The Overall Experience

Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California combines several European architectural styles.

Ultimately, I think Hearst Castle is worth visiting because of the combination of everything you experience there. The architecture and pools are impressive, but so are the gardens, the history, the views, and the unusual setting above the California coast.
If you are already traveling along Highway 1, Hearst Castle is an especially easy attraction to add to your itinerary.
Hearst Castle FAQ
When planning a trip to Hearst Castle a series of questions come to mind. Here are the most common questions I get about Visiting Hearst Castle.
Is Hearst Castle overrated?
That depends on what you expect.
If you’re expecting to see a medieval castle that is hundreds or even thousands of years old, you might be disappointed. Hearst Castle is not an ancient European castle.
But that’s not really what you’re visiting.
California doesn’t have a long history of medieval European-style castles. The oldest Spanish missions in California date back only to the late 1700s. Hearst Castle is instead an extravagant American estate built in the early 20th century.
Once you understand that, I don’t think Hearst Castle is overrated. For a California attraction, I think Hearst Castle is worth visiting.
Is Hearst Castle worth the drive?
If you’re already driving along Highway 1, I think Hearst Castle is worth the drive. The castle isn’t an isolated attraction; it fits naturally into a Central Coast road trip.
The surrounding coastline is beautiful, and there are plenty of worthwhile stops nearby. The town of San Simeon, for example, has beaches, a historic pier, and the famous Piedras Blancas elephant seal rookery.
See my guide to things to do in San Simeon if you want to explore more of the area around Hearst Castle.
How much time do you need at Hearst Castle?
I wouldn’t plan Hearst Castle as a quick roadside stop. If you’re going to make the trip to the top of the hill, give yourself enough time to take your tour and appreciate the estate rather than rushing through it.
The amount of time you’ll need depends on the tour you choose and how much time you spend exploring the grounds. I would treat Hearst Castle as a significant part of your day rather than something to squeeze in between other stops.
For current tour options, schedules, and reservations, check the official Hearst Castle website.
What is the best time to visit Hearst Castle?
If you have flexibility in your itinerary, I would choose a day when the weather is expected to be clear.
Our first visit was during heavy rain and fog, and we could barely see the landscape outside the castle. When we returned on a sunny day, the experience was completely different.
The castle itself is still worth seeing when the weather isn’t perfect, but the views are such an important part of the experience that I would avoid visiting in heavy fog if you have another opportunity.
A clear day can make a big difference in deciding whether Hearst Castle is worth visiting.
Where should you stay when visiting Hearst Castle?
If you’re traveling any distance to visit Hearst Castle, I recommend staying overnight rather than making the castle a quick stop on a long drive.
Cambria is one of my favorite places to stay in this part of the Central Coast. It’s close to Hearst Castle and gives you a convenient base for exploring the coastline.
We have stayed in Cambria for several nights, and I think it’s an especially good choice if you want to slow down and enjoy the area rather than simply visit Hearst Castle and leave.
See my guide to things to do in Cambria for more ideas about exploring the town and surrounding area.
What else can you do near Hearst Castle?
Hearst Castle works particularly well as part of a larger Central Coast trip. You can combine your visit with San Simeon, the Piedras Blancas elephant seals, Cambria, and other stops along Highway 1.
Rather than repeating all of that information here, see my detailed guide to things to do in San Simeon and my guide to things to do in Cambria.
